Ask for leave

Dear Joey,

I am Bai Dongyi, a student in PHE1031CB.My SID is 07608511.I would like to know if I could ask for a casual leave of absence for the class on Feb 4th. Because the train tickets on Feb 5 or 6 (only few days before the Spring Festival) are really hard to buy. So I plan to take the train back home on Feb 2.I play tennis every week except when the weather is bad. So I will try to make up the lesson myself.

Best wishes,

Bai Dongyi

Here are my views on the education and culture of the three cities

Here are my views on the education and culture of the three cities:

Hong Kong:

Since Hong Kong is a former colony, Hong Kong's education system has roughly followed the system of the UK. At the higher education levels, both British and American systems exist. Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where east meets west. Different people from different places with different cultural backgrounds create the diverse culture.

Singapore:

There are four state universities in Singapore and this country has a high literacy rate. The same with Hong Kong, Singapore was once a colony. It was once a part of Malaysia as well. So the diversity of the culture is obvious. Its official languages are English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Now, Singapore is striving to promote itself as a centre for arts and culture to become "gateway between the East and West".

Beijing:

Beijing is an ancient capital with a long history. It is also home to lots of colleges and universities, including several famous universities of international stature. It is widely regarded as cultural centre in China. It has lots of old architectures, e.g. the Forbidden City. Peking Opera is well-known throughout the national capital. It is commonly lauded as one of the highest achievements of Chinese culture.

Want take part in the Visiting ZJ and HK Program

Want take part in the Visiting ZJ and HK Program

The economy of Zhejiang is developing quite fast. Its GDP per person is the highest in provinces. Hangzhou is also an ancient capital with a long history and varieties of culture. In this program, I want to know more about Zhejiang University that is one of the top universities in China and the higher education in mainland China though I come from mainland but I haven't studied in universities there. Furthermore, I'd like to experience the history and culture of Hangzhou. I like to make friends with the students there, too. On the other hand, I do not know much about Hong Kong since I have only studied here for several months, in most of which time I stay in CUHK. So I expect to learn more about other aspects of Hong Kong.

A Report On the Lecture by Professor Martin L.Perl

Luckily,we had the chance to listen to the lecture on Developing Creativity and Innovation in Engineering and Science delivered by Professor Martin L.Perl.Now I would like to share my ideas and experience on this lecture and topic with you.

First,I fully agree with Professor Martin L.Perl on the viewpoint that "Creativity is sought everywhere".Of course you can seek creativity in arts, entertainment and so on,but also you can seek creativity in daily common activities. Please don't look down upon small things, which actually reflect your wisdom and character. In my view,it is really necessary to spend some time thinking about small daily things to live and work efficiently, such as how to get to a place in a short time by shortcut, how to buy everyday supplies to save money. Why spend time on small things?Because I think it is a good way to put our ideas into practise and check them.Even if our thoughts are wrong, they won't bring big loses to us.In many cases, big discoveries come from small ones.Creativity is a combination of ideas and actions.Only vague ideas are of little use.

Secondly,Professor Martin L.Perl. says,"A creative idea in science or engineering must conform to the law of conservation of energy."I have to admit I have doubts about this statement.Quite often, especially in physics,it is hard to decide whether a theory is right or not.As you know,a theory is true only under certain conditions while the conditions change, the theory may be wrong. The problem is that we can't provide all kinds of conditions to examine the theory. Each time we apply the theory,we are examining it.If the predictions made by using the theory are often quite faraway from the experiment results, the theory can be depended on.Well, some theories are always tested true so people make them truth. These theories become fundamental.Another theory against the fundamental theories,e.g. the law of conservation of energy,is quickly decided wrong by people. That's the problem! The fundamental theories that are always tested true may become unavailable as society advances and people can handle more powerful methods to create extraordinary conditions to test these theories. So I suppose arbitrarily killing a new-born theory is the enemy to creativity.Though the new-born theory is wrong,we can still learn from it.

Finally,I want to talk about bad and good ideas.Bad ideas may lead to failure but failure is also a kind of success, successful to point out to you which way you shouldn't go and what you can improve.

MEMO

To: Mr. John Lee

From: Dong

Subject: to open fairylands for the senior to enjoy their senior age

Purpose:

Mr. John Lee, I intend to introduce the market opportunity to you as the population of senior citizens is growing quite fast.

Description:

Actually, fairylands for the senior are places for the elderly to enjoy a dignified retirement.

  • Environment and atmosphere: We shall provide various environments to our customers. Those who like to get close to nature can just stay in gardens and the like while some that are fond of an abstemious way of life are able to live in a village. If some seniors think living in hotels is the best, of course they can select sumptuous hotels. In one word, we should provide different supplies to meet different demands.

  • Activities: As it's the same with environment and atmosphere, activities should be various, such as, chatting over tea, playing Chinese chess, singing and dancing, having classes to learn something that attracts them, including how to get on well with their family members, how to fight against loneliness. Again, the only activity we must provide is what they want.

  • Service: We should provide medical treatment to keep them healthy here.

  • Sources of revenue: We won't charge for just coming to join. But how can we make money to support the fairyland? Well, we can put up many advertisements in our fairyland and let some retail sellers come in to start their business. Both of above will bring profits to us. And we will be paid as well for the medical treatment provided. What's more, if we do well in helping the senior enjoy their life solving the social problem, we may be given donations.

Reasons for introduction:

As you know, the world is becoming older and older. For Hong Kong, in 2001,11.1% of the populations are older than 65.It's predicted by experts that by 2012 the number will go up to 12.5%29.2% by 2050.Furthermore, it’s not only a regional problem, but also a global one. It must be admitted that unlike the young who have the burden of bringing up children, the obligation to provide for their parents and the housing mortgage to pay off, the senior have their advantages having more money to consume. Market is so big and is still growing. So I think it’s a big opportunity for our company not only for its economic interests but also for its social benefits.

Target market and customers:

The senior, especially those who have retired and have nothing to do all day long. They’d like to make friends, acquire some useful knowledge and enjoy the life!

Benefits:

  • To our company: We can make profits from the fairylands we build.

  • To the customers: They will make lots of friends, acquire some useful knowledge and enjoy the life.

  • To society: With solving the intractable social problems, the families of the senior will be less worried about them.

As mentioned above, since it’s a great opportunity for our company, I’m looking forward to your approval and support.

A User's Report on Grammar Girl

Today I read an article on I.e. Versus E.g.written by Grammar Girl.First Grammar Girl began with an advertisement which created a common situation in which if we forget important computer files at home we can use GoToMyPC to get access to the files. This way to start with ordinary and familiar life helps to attract readers' eyes. Then she came to the point--the differences between the abbreviations e.g. and e.g.She revealed to us clearly that "I.e. stands for id est and means roughly 'that is.'E.g. stands for exempli gratia, which means 'for example.'"After just disclosing the meanings of these two words,Grammar Girl told us how to memorize the differences by remembering the first letters and the pronunciation. It became much easier for us to discern the distinction after we were given several examples while abstract explanations can hardly make it clear to people. What followed was she talked about whether there should be a comma after i.e. or e.g.She made a table for the websites summarizing the opinions of a few different style guides and drew a conclusion.Last, she didn't forget to put up some advertisements to support her business.

I.e. and e.g. contains only 4 letters but she used a several-hundred-word passage to explain the distinction. We should learn from this that paying attention to tiny problem is important.A little success can't make you successful while a little mistake could make you fail. After solving the main problem, she stepped further discussing whether or not a comma is required after i.e. and e.g.The existence of a small comma really doesn't matter but Grammar Girl referred to quite a lot of websites. Her studying attitude makes me consider my studying attitude.

Dong

第三,二者的创作永远是在虚构与假定的条件下进行的,情境则完全是虚构的。电视电影可以说都是一种"弄假成真"的艺术。《梁祝》电影电视都试图营造东晋时期的社会面貌,增加作品的真实感觉。另一方面,摄影机也可以制造出骗局。例如利用光学镜头的不同性能和胶片感光乳剂的化学性质,可以使被摄的物体变形;

好了,继续看Windows Vista Beyond the Manual 和Quick Calculus.
